![]() ![]() In my analysis of the Sura, I will discuss the broader themes in al-Shu’ara, and critically analyzing the story of Prophet Lot. The common themes in the recounts of the prophetic stories shows the similarity in the messages brought by all the prophets, and reinforces the Qur’anic message that all the Abrahamic prophets were messengers of the same God. In contrary to its title, most of Sura al-Shu’ara tells the stories of the prophets, including Abraham, Moses, Noah, Salih and Lot. Surat al-Shu’ara got its name from verse 224 that mentions the pre-Islamic poets. She emphasizes that the Qur’an is the literal word of God and was revealed through Angel Gabriel to Prophet Muhammad. ![]() She marks the source of the poets’ poetry in Satan and jinn and challenges that no Satan or jinn could have possibly produced a text like the Qur’an. In Surat al-Shu’ara (the poets), God mentions the significance of poetry and poets in Pre-Islamic and Islamic era. However, the Qur’an distinguishes itself from poetry and Prophet Muhammad from poet. The Qur’an, revealed in verses and characterized by rhythm and repetition, resembles a 114-chapter long piece of poetry. ![]()
